Verify your phone number
Accounts created with an email and password need a verified phone number before they can use Dropstone. Verification is an automated phone call that reads a six-digit code aloud. Here is how it works and what to do if the call does not come.
If you created your account with an email and password, Dropstone asks you to verify a phone number before you can start using it. Accounts created through Google or GitHub skip this step.
Note
Verification is a phone call, not a text message. An automated call reads your code aloud; nothing is sent by SMS.
Why it is required
Phone verification is how Dropstone keeps free usage available to real people. Without it, a single person could create unlimited email-and-password accounts and drain the allowance meant for everyone else. Google and GitHub accounts already carry that assurance, which is why they are exempt.
Your number is used for this verification and is not shown to anyone.
How to verify
Enter your phone number
When prompted, enter your number with its country code, and keep your phone within reach.Answer the call
Within about a minute you will receive an automated call from Dropstone. Answer it and stay on the line.Listen for the code
The call greets you by name and reads a six-digit code aloud, three digits at a time, then repeats it. Write it down as you hear it.Enter the code
Type the code into the verification dialog. It is valid for five minutes.
That is it. You will not be asked again on that account.
The call did not come
- Wait patiently. The call usually arrives within a minute. Give it two before requesting another.
- Check the country code. The most common cause is a number entered without one, or with the wrong one.
- Make sure your phone can receive calls. Some VoIP and virtual numbers cannot take incoming calls, and a phone on silent or in a call-blocking mode may not ring. Check your missed calls.
- Request a new call. The dialog lets you send another after a short wait. Each further request waits longer than the last, so give the current call time to arrive first. Only the newest code works; older ones stop working once a new call is placed.
If you missed the call, request another. If you entered the wrong code five times, the code is invalidated and you will need a new call.
If none of that works, contact support with the email on your account. Do not include the phone number in the message; we will ask for it securely.
Changing the number later
Verification is tied to your account, not to the number. If you change phones you do not need to re-verify. If you need the number on your account updated for any reason, contact support.
